3. Which words do you use?

Visually oriented learners do not use the same words as auditory or kinaesthetic learners and vice-versa.

Each sensory type tends to use specific words. Try to guess the specific words in the following sentences.

l. l would like to ..................................................................you before the test.

2. Allow me to.............................................................my point of view.

WARNING

Needless to say that these exercises have no scientific value at all. Some readers will notice that they are largely influenced by Neu ro - linguistic Programming. (NLP in short) but a good amount of common sense is enough to do them. Actually, they are intended to make pupils / students aware of the way they learn, which may eventually be a valuable tool for their future school work. The classification goes as follows: the visual type, the auditive (audi-tory) type and the kinaesthetic type. Note that people cannot always be assigned entirely to a single sensory group. in other words, you cannot be fully visual or kinaesthetic but rather you are dominated by one tendency: for example, you can be an auditive (auditory) - dominant learner.

STRUCTURE

3 exercises :

1. ARE YOU A VISUAL, AUDITIVE (AUDITORY) OR KINESTHETIC LEARNER ?

Aim: Discover how people (learners in our case) perceive things. Be aware of the 3 groups and their main characteristics.

2. WHAT DO YOU LIKE AT SCHOOL?

Aim: Discover what type of material each group prefers using at school.

3. WHICH WORDS DO YOU USE ?

Aim : Discover the words most often used by each group.

To be read after the first exercise : information about the main groups

Always notices details and cannot bear the sight of blood. If her/his addressee does not look her/him straight in the eye, s/he gets the impression that the addressee is not listening. Also very attentive to the expression s/he can read on the addressee's face. S/he generally has a good memory of people and places and likes to take pictures of them. If you tell her/him the route to follow, do not forget to show it on a map. S/he is not easily disturbed by noise and is the type that watches television while doing her/his homework. Spring is her / his favourite season because of its marvellous colours.

At school, s/he tends to follow the teacher with her/his eyes while the teacher moves around the classroom. Not surprisingly, s/he recalls information by visualising the source. Something typical about the type: s/he tends to avoid oral production and when asked to speak, will keep her/his production to a minimum despite the fact that s/he could be a very good pupil!

S/he must look away when stared in the eye! Contrary to the previous type, s/he doesn't like details and tends to prefer concise explanations! S/he needs time to act and take long - term decisions. When s/he has to meet someone, s/he likes to imagine what s/he will tell the person. S/he does not cut people short. S/he keeps on asking questions for a better understanding of things. Irritated by cries and sounds - when children make a racket for instance - and knows how to spot unusual sounds such as the engine of a car ...

At school, s/he is regarded as the nice but naughty person and as such attracts the others' attention and consequently is often a group leader. S/he loves telling stories to her/his school - friends and is very often a chatter - box... Understands an oral presentation without the need of visual help. S/he may be bright at oral work but the thorn of the rose is that the performance on written tests is sometimes poor... Often plays a musical instrument or at least...would like to.

S/he loves saunas and massages and cannot bear even tiny animals on her/his skin! Very sensitive, s/he likes shaking hands, keeping close links with the family and the relatives and touching people and things. S/he is also easily moved by others' problems.

At school, s/he feels s/he is two sizes bigger than the desk and is very sensitive to room temperature. S/he likes speaking with concrete words and has the power of breaking the language into bits and pieces! S/he generally writes words over and over and is not neat at all! Last but not least, s/he uses inouement and rhythmic routines in order to learn!
